Get the exact amount you need — no guesswork.
Figuring out exactly how much mulch you need can be frustrating, especially when your garden beds aren't perfectly square. Buying too little means an extra trip to the hardware store, and buying too much wastes money. That is exactly why this mulch calculator exists.
The standard recommendation for mulch depth is exactly 3 inches. Why? A 3-inch layer is the sweet spot. It is thick enough to block sunlight and prevent weed seeds from germinating, while also retaining soil moisture during hot summer months. If you go shallower than 2 inches, weeds will push right through. If you pile it deeper than 4 inches, you risk suffocating your plant roots and inviting fungal diseases.
When you go to buy mulch, it is sold in two ways: bulk (measured in cubic yards) or bagged (usually measured in 2 cubic foot bags). Here is the golden rule: One cubic yard equals exactly 13.5 standard bags. If your project requires more than 3 cubic yards (about 40 bags), it is almost always cheaper to order bulk delivery from a local nursery. For smaller touch-up jobs, grabbing standard bags is much easier.
Most people can easily calculate a basic rectangle, but landscaping features like trees and corner beds require different math.
